Making history as the first South Korean idol group to be nominated for a Grammy (two months after becoming the first South Korean idol group to have a Billboard #1 on the Hot 100, and they just debuted a #1 album and single this week too,) if you are a member of this sub, it’s likely you’ve now heard of BTS in some capacity. And it’s almost as likely you have an opinion about them.
This is a comprehensive post dedicated to explaining various aspects of BTS’ music and cultural context in order to serve as an introduction to the group, similar to the old Pop Compass series on this sub.
One of the clearest issues when discussing BTS is a tendency to either gloss over or blow entirely out of proportion BTS’ mistakes, and I’ve done my best to ensure neither of these things happen and that, instead, BTS’ history is covered accurately but with humour and criticism where appropriate.
A brief note to those who are already calling me jobless on Twitter: the members of BTS are, like all of us (except you, Automod, hi babe,) human beings. They have done things that merit criticism. All of this will be explored in this post. But first, let’s cover the basics.

Come be my teacher

This section is intended to introduce you to the seven members of BTS, discuss BTS’ origins in the industry, and clarify a number of terms that may be unfamiliar to you.

As basic as it gets

BTS is an abbreviation of Bangtan Sonyeondan, a romanisation of the Hangul 방탄소년단. Bangtan Sonyeondan roughly translates to ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts’, though this fact is often ignored, possibly due to the fact that it’s ridiculous and men in the military in Korea think it’s stupid (and they’re right.) BTS are most frequently referred to as BTS, Bangtan, or Bangtan Boys.
Due to the group’s increased international activities, it’s been stated in recent years that BTS can also be an abbreviation for ‘Beyond the Scene’. For the purposes of this post, they’ll be called BTS, unless I slip up and call them Bangtan. Which I definitely will.
In South Korea, the name for fans of an idol group is determined by the group (or more accurately, their label). Blackpink’s fans are called Blinks, a cute portmanteau of ‘black’ and ‘pink’. Fans of Girls’ Generation are called Sones, in reference to their Korean name, Sonyeo Sidae (SNSD). Before their replacement by Blackpink, 2NE1 fans were known as Blackjacks, because 21 is the number of points you cannot exceed in a game of blackjack. GOT7 fans’ ahgase nickname is an alternate spelling of iGot7, their official fandom name. These fandom names make varying degrees of sense, but are hugely important for a group.
BTS’ dedicated fans are known as ARMY (with or without an s added to make it plural), which is another abbreviation, this time for ‘Adorable Representative MC for Youth’ and we’re just going to pretend it’s not. You've probably seen ARMY before, whether on Twitter, Youtube, or someone complaining about them.

Members

Members will be referred to with the Korean naming system, which places the surname (family name) first. I’ll also be using the most common romanisations, but I’ll explain if there are others. Their 'official' name is bolded.

RM

Kim Nam-joon — also known as Rap Monster (formerly), Rap Mon (formerly), RM, Real Me, Joon, Joonie, and Namjoon

BTS' leader (a position that can be difficult to explain, but in RM's case, BTS was essentially built up around him) and one of its rappers, RM is also the member you're most likely to recognise if you watch a lot of BTS' English interviews, given that he's the only member fluent in English and often acts as a translator for the members of BTS when abroad. (In Bon Voyage 4, a travel show featuring BTS and set in New Zealand, there's a scene where BTS are at a car rental and everyone starts saying that they need Namjoon because he speaks English, which really epitomises his role as the face of the group abroad.)
RM also does a lot of production and songwriting for BTS, and has done a great deal to shape BTS' sound and image. He's released two solo mixtapes, most recently Mono. Like the other rappers in BTS, he's done a number of features, including 2020's Winter Flower by Younha.

J-Hope

Jung Ho-seok — also known as J-Hope, Hobi, and Hoseok

J-Hope is another one of the rappers, as well as being BTS' best dancer, and an occasional vocalist. (Check out his robot to get an idea of his incredible body control.) Like RM, he often takes an active role in producing and composing the group's music.
He's easily the most outwardly positive member of the group, and can frequently be seen smiling through all the members' bullshit. Namjoon has suggested that, were he not to be the leader of BTS, J-Hope would easily fulfill the role in his stead.
As a solo artist, he's released the mixtape (or 'hixtape') Hope World. He's also released a collaboration with Becky G, Chicken Noodle Soup (with a soda on the side!)

Suga

Min Yoon-gi — also known as Suga (pronounced like sugar, without the ‘r’), Agust D (his solo alias — backwards, Agust D is DT Suga; D-T is an abbreviation for Daegu, the city he’s from), Minstradamus (for his ability to predict BTS' future achievements) and Yoongi

The last of BTS' main rappers (though others, primarily Jungkook, have sometimes filled this role in live shows), Suga has been with RM for 10 years, and their partnership has made BTS what it is. Known for his stoic demeanor and thin patience for American media, he presents himself as a rags to riches (or peasant to a king) success story.
As a solo artist going by the name Agust D, he's released two mixtapes, Agust D and D-2, the latter of which was released earlier this year, and the lead single (of sorts) from it, Daechwita, is a must-listen if you have any interest in hip hop or phenomenal visuals based on Korean history.
At the time of writing (December 2020), Yoongi is currently not promoting with BTS after undergoing shoulder surgery to treat an injury accrued before his debut, though he's slated to return in January 2021.

Jin

Kim Seok-jin — also known as Jin, Worldwide Handsome and Seokjin

BTS' oldest member (not that anyone gives him any respect for it) and their 'visual' (in idoldom, the visual member is the most attractive member by Korean beauty standards) who was scouted on the street on the way to university, where he studied acting.
He's released a number of solo tracks, including Tonight, written with RM, and is known for his vibrant personality and high degree of confidence.
You might have heard about him in the news recently, as Jin is about to turn 28 (30 under the Korean age system, which is complicated, let's not get into that) in December and thus is reaching the period where he is legally required to enlist in the armed forces, as South Korea has mandatory conscription for able bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28, though a bill was just passed that would allow exceptional artists (like Jin and the other members of BTS) to delay enlistment a further two years.
Jin's enlistment will have major consequences for BTS, as men are required to serve for a minimum of a year (usually, it ends up being a year and a half) and there's a great deal of speculation regarding what approach Big Hit/BTS will take to enlistment. It's entirely possible that several members, or all of them, may enlist at the same time, in order to be discharged at the same time and immediately resume their careers.

V

Kim Tae-hyung — also known as V, Tae, TaeTae, Yeontan’s father (Yeontan is his dog), and Taehyung

Known mostly for his lower vocal range, V is one of the members of BTS’ popular maknae line (more on this below) along with Jimin and Jungkook. The three maknae line members often rank highly in preference surveys and idol brand rankings (essentially, a measure of how much of a household name an idol is, and how valuable they would be as a brand ambassador).
V has released a number of solo tracks, most recently ‘Sweet Night’ (sung entirely in English) for the Itaewon Class (a drama released on Netflix in the US) soundtrack. He's been working on a solo mixtape, and though no release is currently slated, it seems to be coming soon.
In 2016, he made his debut as an actor in the historical drama series Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. (His costar in Hwarang, Park Seo-joon, was the lead of Itaewon Class. Just a fun fact for you.)

Jimin

Park Ji-min — also known as Jimin, Chimmy/Chimchim, and (Baby) Mochi (for his mochi shaped cheeks)

As mentioned, Jimin is part of the hugely successful maknae line, and, in addition to being one of BTS’ most prominent vocalists, he’s also one of their best dancers.
As a solo artist, he’s released three songs as part of BTS releases (including one of my favourite songs on a BTS record, Filter, from 2020’s MAP OF THE SOUL : 7), all of which have the distinction of having been streamed over 100 million times each on Spotify, making him the most successful Korean solo artist on Spotify.

Jungkook

Jeon Jung-kook — are you ready for this? Also known as Jung Kook (this is the official romanisation no one actually uses), Kookie, JK, muscle pig/muscle bunny (for his ‘bunny’ front teeth and the fact he’s like. jacked), golden maknae, Jeongguk (another romanisation of his name; nicknames like ‘Guk’ and ‘Gukkie’ are derived from it), sell out king (because items he wears or has immediately sell out), and Jungkook

The youngest member of BTS, born in 1997, Jungkook is often referred to as their golden maknae because of his ability to do just about everything, from singing and dancing and rapping to filmmaking and athletics. In the documentary Break The Silence, released earlier this year, he expressed feeling like he doesn’t live up to that title, so we should call him what he is, BTS’ very talented youngest member.
As a solo artist, Jungkook has released a few tracks as part of BTS releases, notably Euphoria, and directed the music video for BTS’ newest single, Life Goes On (he makes videos of the members of BTS and uploads them to the Golden Closet Films series, named for his 'Golden Closet' studio, so this isn’t as random as it seems.)
He’s set to release a solo mixtape at some point in the future. It will probably have lots of EDM style production, because he’s an EDM rat, which you can see most clearly on ‘Stay’ from BTS’ most recent album, BE, a track originally intended for Jungkook’s mixtape.

Subunits 101

There’s a lot of references to ‘lines’ in Korean pop culture. Lines (or subunits) are essentially smaller groupings within a larger group. Here are the best known groupings in BTS.
Rap Line (the members who rap most frequently): RM, Suga, and J-Hope
Vocal Line (the members who sing most frequently): Jin, V, Jimin, and Jungkook
Hyung Line [in the Korean language, ‘hyung’ is an honourific term (a term used out of respect for seniority) translating approximately to ‘older brother’, used by men to refer to other men who are older than them]: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, and usually RM
Maknae Line [‘maknae’ is more of a position title than an honourific, meaning ‘youngest member’; Jungkook is the youngest member and thus maknae of BTS; the maknae line is the three (or four, when RM is counted) youngest members]: V, Jimin, Jungkook
95 Line: this refers to V and Jimin, who were both born in 1995 (in Korea, you can refer to your birth year as making you a ‘# liner’; for example, V and Jimin are 95 liners)
94 Line: RM and J-Hope were both born in 1994
A number of other lines and pairings exist both officially and within the fandom, including the introvert and extrovert lines, and the subunits based on their former living arrangements (Jimin and J-Hope are sometimes referred to as ‘perpetual roommates’, Suga and Jin are called Sin, Suga and J-Hope’s friendship is called Sope.)
Of course, as with any big fandom there are also ship names, but these follow convention and are portmanteaus of the members involved (eg ‘Taekook’ or ‘Vminkook’ or ‘Namkook’). A primer about these relationships and conspiracies will be made in a future Teatime post.

Big Hit and Bang PD

Big Hit Entertainment is the company/agency (these terms are used interchangeably) in charge of BTS, and Bang PD (also known as Hitman Bang, the hits in ‘Hitman’ being musical hits and not, like, murder) is its founder.
In order to understand BTS’ (and Big Hit’s) history you also need to understand idol culture.

Thou shalt have no idols but BTS

Idol culture is incredibly expansive and has deep roots, but in brief, a basic guide to idoldom:
Every idol begins as a trainee for an entertainment company. Trainees are chosen through auditions (Big Hit held a global audition for their second girl group last year — though we don’t talk about Glam, their first girl group, which dissolved due to a member blackmailing an actor, around here, lol) and enter into a contractual relationship with the company.
They’re often under incredibly restrictive rules at very young ages (Jungkook became a trainee at 13) and live away from their families, taking lessons in and undergoing assessments on a wide range of things, from dancing to media training to Japanese (if part of the target market) and English. In many companies, debuting (the process by which a trainee graduates to become a rookie idol, releasing their debut song) is not guaranteed. Trainees will be ranked and compete with each other on a monthly basis in order to retain their place as a trainee, with the likely majority of idol trainees never debuting.
Some trainees are trainees for a relatively short period of time (no member of BTS trained longer than three years); others may face more difficulty (Bang Chan of JYP Entertainment’s boy group Stray Kids was a trainee for seven years before debuting.)
After debut, idols begin to follow a regimented programme of comebacks, concerts, show appearances, fansigns, and other promotional events. In kpop, a comeback is just a new album cycle, with a new single, rather than the more common definition in English of returning after a long period away. Comebacks are often accompanied by mini albums (equivalent to EPs in the anglophone market) or repackages (deluxe editions, essentially.) Full albums can be rare, best typified by Blackpink’s debuting in 2016 and releasing their first full length album (with eight whole tracks!) in 2020. But Blackpink’s management is fucked up, so let’s not dwell too long on that.
For many years, the biggest agencies in kpop have been ‘the big three’ — SM Entertainment (named after CEO Lee Soo Man, label of iconic groups like Girls Generation and Shinee, and now currently managing Red Velvet, EXO, NCT’s 3904 subgroups, and, recently, Aespa), JYP Entertainment (named for founder Park JY, currently managing Twice, Got7, Stray Kids, and Itzy, among others), and YG Entertainment (known for its dungeon [how fans refer to YG's practice of not promoting their artists, they're put in the dungeon], run by Yang Hyun-suk [known as YG,] and mismanaging Blackpink, Big Bang, Winner, Treasure, and 2NE1 [rest in peace].)
When BTS first debuted in 2013, it’s undeniable they faced difficulties due to being from a then-small company, Big Hit. In Korea, a vital part of promotion for up and coming, newly debuted idol groups is music shows, where idols perform choreography for their comebacks as part of a televised competition. At the end of the show, a winner for that week is chosen based on the voting system, which varies from show to show. This is what people refer to when they discuss a song or group’s ‘1st (first) win’. Winning a music show is an important achievement.
Music shows are run by South Korea’s broadcasting corporations: they are SBS (Inkigayo), KBS (Music Bank), MBC (Show! Music Core), Mnet (M Countdown), MBC Music (Show Champion) and SBS MTV (The Show). Of these shows, SBS’ Inkigayo is arguably the most prestigious.
The big three agencies have connections to these broadcasters and shows that give their artists an advantage. Generally speaking, artists from smaller companies are unlikely to reach notable levels of success, as they usually lack the resources and connections necessary to do so. That’s not to say it doesn’t happen — many successful (mostly girl) groups these days are part of smaller companies.
When BTS debuted, as stated, Big Hit was a small company. This is where the narrative of BTS as the underdogs of kpop because of their company began. In some ways, this narrative holds true. In others, it collapses — BTS’ lack of success during their rookie years has a number of factors that could explain it, including strong competition (most notably from SM’s EXO), their initially being a hip hop oriented group, their subversive lyrics (their first two years of music focused on the failures of the Korean education system and other societal problems), their not meeting idol beauty standards, and Big Hit bring a small company. What’s important to remember is that the beginning of BTS’ career as a group was fairly unremarkable, aside from their accruement of minor accolades and the planting of seeds for what was to come. They didn’t have any music show wins in 2013 or 2014, and wore a lot of eyeliner!
And then 2015 happened. We’ll get to that.

The history of BTS, specifically

BTS was formed, as previously mentioned, around RM. As a teenager, he was involved in the underground rap community in South Korea under the name Runch Randa, which he recently said was due to a friend’s screen name in the hugely popular MMO MapleStory. (We still don’t know what a ‘runch’ or ‘randa’ is, though.) In 2010, after failing an audition for another company, he was mentioned to one of Big Hit’s main producers (and future BTS collaborator) Pdogg by another rapper, and then, after meeting with and auditioning for Bang PD, was subsequently signed to Big Hit as a trainee. Bang PD and Pdogg began crafting a hip hop oriented group around RM.
Yoongi had a similar story to RM, becoming an underground rapper going by the name of Gloss in his hometown of Daegu, also notable for producing for a number of other rappers. Suga entered a competition for rappers that also served as an audition, and despite achieving second place, went on to join Big Hit as a producer and has subsequently joked that he was tricked into joining BTS. He has known/lived with RM for ten years as of 2020.
J-Hope began as a dancer, participating in a dance crew in his hometown of Gwangju, and was considered seriously accomplished on the competition circuit. Due to his dance abilities he entered a dance competition run by JYP, and moved on to auditioning for Big Hit, becoming a trainee alongside RM and Suga.
Jin was first scouted off the street for his good looks (a story he has told many, many times) by a recruiter for SM Entertainment. He thought it was a scam. A few years later, he was scouted again on his way to university, this time by a Big Hit rep, and he was convinced to audition for Big Hit. Ironically, like Suga, he had other intentions when he became a trainee, intending to act, but was added to BTS’ lineup and the rest is history.
Jungkook’s career began in 2011 when he auditioned for the Mnet talent show Superstar K in either Busan, his hometown, or Daegu (different places say different things, corrections welcome.) He was ultimately eliminated, but, as the legend goes, seven separate agencies (including JYP) reached out, interested in recruiting him. He chose to join Big Hit as a trainee due to his admiration for RM, a thread that comes up again and again.
Tae became a trainee by sheer happenstance. After accompanying a friend to an audition for Big Hit in Daegu, a member of staff asked him to audition as well, and, after quickly obtaining permission, he did, becoming the only person to pass the audition that day. (Sorry to Tae’s friend, lmao, but that’s hilarious.)
Jimin was the last member to join Big Hit as a trainee, and had the shortest training time. He was a gifted dancer, and the top of his class in the modern dance department at his arts-oriented school in Busan. With a teacher’s encouragement, he auditioned for Big Hit in Busan, and passed.
Initially, Big Hit planned for the group that would include RM to be a hip hop group, and their debut was slated for 2011. However, for reasons that probably had everything to do with money and less to do with artistry (but thank god), the group was reorganised into a more traditional idol group, and the lineup with RM, Suga, J-Hope, Jin, Jungkook, V, and Jimin was finalised in 2012, with BTS finally debuting on 13 June 2013.
Over the years various people (mostly rappers) have said they were trained to become part of a nine to ten member BTS, including some notable names. Supreme Boi (now a BTS collaborator, working as a producer) was originally part of the lineup for BTS, before becoming a producer instead. Beenzino (who may be familiar to those familiar with Korean hip hop) is rumoured to have been invited to join the nine to ten member lineup, but turned it down.
Now that we’ve discussed BTS’ beginnings, it’s time to talk about what came after their debut.

Okay, so, I just lied

Check your parents' stats and if they're generous make sure you pass your drivers test (maybe even ask if you can get a nicer one! immediately sell your car, they lose value fast) and take a martial art. It's much cheaper if they pay for it ($1K per tier in some countries) and gets you in good shape. If you're athletic, grind at a sport from middle school onwards. Actor Become an actor
Be hot. You can drop out at 16 and get your GED for $1k (ask your parents for money or do freelance gigs for a couple of years). If you're not, go to the gym and for walks often. Pets count as additional walks which you can take from age 8+. Grind at a sport in school if you can to keep your health well and get plastic surgery at 18. Generally if your appearance stats are low it's either a nose job or liposuction that will fix it. Always go to the best plastic surgeon. Marry rich if you have to or work for a couple years if you have to, but start the career as soon as you can. Always work 5 more hours a week than required and compliment your supervisor if their coolness is high. Sleep with people in Hollywood (bosses coworkers etc). Your spouse/parent will generally be mad if you're in rude magazines, so hold off on dating unless they're cool or make them deal with it.
Airplane Pilot Become an airline captain
Grind in school and keep your mental health well. No drugs but drink if you feel like it, just make sure you can go to AA or whatever. Always work 5 more hours a week than required and compliment your supervisor if their coolness is high. If you're rich and you've inherited an airplane or you can afford lessons, take them. Go to University for a science thing that isn't biology lol. Start your Pilot Apprentice job.

What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you as a driver?	I posted a link in my edit from in my truck today and tomorrow i will post a picture with all 8 of my kids to verify that since some are cried folly for that.
How are you paid?	Wierdest thing that happened to me was having a guy try to pull me over by looking up at me and pointing at me then proceded to fake jerk off. I was so WTF I looked ahead then looked back and he did it again. I flipped him off and he speed away. Also I've seen many dudes just going to town on themselves driving down the highway...All that and never seen one boob. So disappointing. LOL.
How much does getting licensed cost?	I'm paid by the mile but unlike most companies i get paid for every mile i drive not what some computer tells this is the distance from city to city(which was always short). I also get stop pay and triple pay on holidays if i'm on the road. If i get stuck out on the road due to breakdowns or what not i get 150 a day and they pay for my hotel stay. We also get something called Per Diem which is a tax thingy. You get 25 dollars a day for food and such to claim on your taxes.
Do you have much free time between deliveries?	I get decent time off. My job i got now is the cream of the crop to over the road driving. I get to pick my load every week(2nd choice out of 4) and it's there then a back haul right back home. So if i want to pick a short load and be home 3-4 days i can or pick a long one and be home 1-2 i can. Most places do not work like that. If your a regional driver you basically get 1-2 days no matter what and you never really know where you are going. you can pick up and deliver multiple times a day or not and never know where you headed next until you finish with the deliver your on. It was annoying when i had to deal with that.
Are you able to stay in some cities longer than others?	It does depend on how long you stay in a city. I got lucky acouple years ago and delivered in the morning to Vegas and the back haul she found me did not pick up till the next morning not far away. BlackJack was my friend that day. *chuckle You have to realize tho that your in a huge truck. Even if you in a city lets say that your favorite football team is playing at while your there. You cannot simply drive to the game and go see it. Also a lot of cities do not have many truck stops. Or at least where you would like them to be to do any sight seeing.
How far back do they check your driving record?	Most companies are 7 years i think? maybe 5. it's been awhile since i filled out a app. I do know that if you have a DUI or wreckless driving in the last i think 7 years they will not hire you. Might be 5 also but those 2 are a no no. Also most of the very well paying jobs(mostly local) want a good 3 years truck driving exp no tickets or accidents also.
I tried to answer a question that got deleted before i finished and i feel that it should be addressed.	First off DO NOT DO THAT. It is very dangerous for YOU. When our tires blow they almost always throw chunks out. Chunks that can easily at least give you windshield major major cracks. Going 60-70 i highly doubt you want that to happen.
I like following a little too close behind semi trucks to save on fuel when driving long distances. After I have been following for a few miles the driver always makes a couple lane changes. If I continue to follow them they will slow waaay down and drive at 40-50 until I pass them. This happens to me often. Are you familiar with this behavior? Are they afraid I am going to crash into them by following them? Is there anything I can do so they let me continue to follow behind them?	Also, yes a lot of us do not like not being able to see cars behind us. Part of our job is to know everything that is going on around us to be safe for us and specially people who drive cars. Our trucks could easily kill you if we run into you and we obviously do not want that. Have you noticed that bar that hangs down at the back of our trailer? That is mandatory on every trailer now because back in the day cars would run into us and basically the car would get cut in two with you in it. Thank being said those things help but only so much.
Have you ever seen anything weird or strange on the road? A few years ago I took my first trip to Vegas with my uncle on his trailer. It was night time and he was delivering warehouse materials if I'm not mistaken. Anyways he got out to take a quick piss and asked if I had to go and if so to take care of business so I did. When we were going to turn back we heard noise like foot steps and we saw a guy standing there facing us. He had a brown looking long coat and somewhat long gray hair. Anyway my uncle asked what he was doing here alone as he flashed him and out of nowhere, I shit you not, he got on all fours and started running into the dessert! We got scared shitless an ran I to the trailer and left. Have you guys ever heard of such a thing or seen it ??	LOL well not that but i did have a guy try to pull me over to jerk off. In fact sadly i've seen more dicks then tits when i look down into other peoples cars so i try to not do that much.
How dangerous is it? my friend, whose dad is a truck driver, said that his father carries a gun with him and has had people try to rob him. Have you ever been in a dangerous situation like that? And how scenic are the routes?	In 5 years i've never felt in danger from crime. Driving in the mountains in winter tho is a whole different story. Hands used to hurt when i got done driving from gripping the steering wheel so hard. And the rocky mountains are flat out beautiful. Colorado and Montana are the best states.
How well does it pay?	Your first yet it is a little rough. I made 27k. After you pay your dues at a startup company I made about 40k. With the company I am at now after 5 years I'm averaging about 50-55k.
CB radio, you still use it?	After hearing what people say over it when I was training I decide to never get one. Only time I wish I had one is when I'm stuck in traffic to know what is going on.
That's disappointing. As non-truck drivers, almost everyone in my family has a CB. It's a useful tool when trying to find where the highway patrol was last spotted, and it's fun to just chat with drivers.	I've just heard way to many assholes on it. I'd rather talk to family and friends frankly.
I work at petro in reddick fl, i cook in the deli in the fuel island, so i see nothing but truckers everyday i work. Im curious, which truck stop do you like the best? Which is friendliest and cleanest?	I prefer Pilot but i do eat at the Petro sometimes because of the French dressing at the salad bar...i'm picky. *chuckle.
Does it piss you off when you're on the highway keeping your usual (large) distance from the vehicle in front and someone cuts in front of you because they think they have enough room? I'm guessing it's not as easy as take your foot of the accelerator since you have so much momentum.	Yes it does irk me when cars merge right in front of me. They dont understand how dangerous it is for them. If a deer jumps out right when they do that and they slam on the breaks i could easily kill everyone in that car.
Also, why do I always see cops pulling trucks over?	Trucks have a very large and strict rule set. We can get fined for many many things other then just speeding or what not. Fines are not cheap either. I got a parking ticket at a rest area once for parking on the side of the on ramp and it was over 150 bucks.
New to the country and a CDL isn't that hard to get. You can easily get one in a month, or less. That's just my assumption, we don't really have a lot of non-white drivers in Alaska but it's a relatively low skill job that pays decent. Can You back your semi sufficiently? Too many drivers struggle with this.	Yes I can back it fairly well now. Took me a year or 2 to really learn how to get it into tight spots. I always like it when you pick up or deliver to docks with a lot of room. I've always(and many of my peers agree)been about just taking my time. Get out and look if your not sure. Some drivers will laugh at you but they are just dicks and probably have hit someone else while backing in.
How often do you pee in bottles while driving? My friend's Mom and step dad are truck drivers. Once she diarrhead in a big taco bell cup because they couldn't stop.	I wont say i've never done it but i will say that i take it home and pour it out in the toilet. Sometimes you just gotta go. It sickens me that the pavement in truck stops smells like piss.
Since I'll most probably miss the AMA I'll post my question here, and hopefully someone will remember it and paste it Sunday. Sleep schedule: do you respect it, do you sleep enough, have you ever had to drive while tired. If you're not freelance, do your employers force you to drive for impossibly long times? Do you know of any of your colleagues who are in these conditions?	Do i drive a little tired sometimes. If i get real tired I always pull off the road. Sleep is precious to me LOL. Also i'm not going to risk my life or that family of 4s life in the car next to me because i dont want to be a half hour late. I tend to take longer then 10 hour breaks(which is the law to reset your driving hours) Many drivers have ruin it for the rest of us by falling asleep at the wheel. Honestly, I think a lot of that can be chalked up to inexperience. Of course, being unfamiliar with the road is big too. Worst case scenario, be a newbie and miss a gear change :(	Well missing a gear change is not that big of a deal. You just force and grind it in. Even 40 year vets have told me they still grind gears from time to time.
Lot lizards. Do they still exist?	Indeed they do tho in 5 years i've only been approached by 2...and one guy that either tried to get me to jerk him off or him me by driving next to me until i looked over and pointed at me and started to pretend jerk off...ugh I still shiver.
I recall hearing a story from my father, who knows fairly well how a stupidly huge number of things work, about a driver carrying a piece of heavy machinery on his vehicle, as in a bulldozer, who was going to the office (DoT I believe?) to find out where his new height clearance with the dozer qualified or disqualified him to drive on his way, but ended up passing under just such a bridge. My father got to speak to this man after coming upon the aftermath being cleared out, which is why I don't doubt the story's veracity. The dozer resisted the impact and kicked the poor man's truck upward into the underside of the bridge, knocking the man unconscious, which all he could remember was everything going white. 2) What circumstances would have lead to the above story, you think? I think if memory serves he was coming in from out of town with it already loaded. 3) What the hell is up with those highway side sections that semis are required to go to? I see a scale and an office and a shitload of police at them, so I'm guessing it's some manner of inspection. 4) This one's probably been asked even already. . . Ever participated in drafting? If so, how's it all worked out? If not, why not? (I know the answer is pretty much "because death", but I'm curious to hear the specifics of the danger) 5) Are CB radios still a thing with your modern truck driver?	1) I'm a company driver so not much other then keeping my license current and doing my DoT physical every 2 years. We lease our trucks through Penske so my boss and the guys at Penske do all the regulation/insurance/inspection/etc. 2) Well I have never dealt with over sized loads myself but a number of things could have happened. First off Just because the clearance level says one number it does not mean it is correct anymore. Sometimes redoing the road raises it another inch and places like NYC(*cringe) and Philly measure the level from axle up(or so i heard but it's like a foot taller then what it actually says and how i found that out is a whole nother story)instead of the ground up with is ape shit stupid to me. And the guy could have just been a idiot. Should never drive under a bridge not knowing your height. For us regular drivers it's always 13 feet 6 in. 3)They put you on a scale to see if your weight is okay. You can have a maximum of 80k total. 12k for your front steer tires 34k for your next 8 called the drive tires under the front of the trailer 34k for your tandem axles at the back. They also can pop you for numerous violation which would take me forever to list them all. But mostly it's a quick weight test and sometimes to bring your paperwork in and other times it's a full inspection which takes like a hour or so.
I have been wanting to ask someone to do an AMA for awhile now, but didn't think other people would be interested. How often are you actually home?	3)I believe that is the axel lube...I could be wrong lol. I'm not a mechanic by any means and my schooling was 5 years ago when learning that was the only time it was relevant. 4) I'm home 1-4 days a week. About 2.5 on avg i would say not counting vacation time and such.

You're a good person for finding this comment as I am sure it was buried. I have a couple more if you don't mind.	Ty for that but being a new redditor and the fail of when i was actually going to hold the AMA made me go back to my original post and need to answer all questions.
I know you hit the tires to make sure they are inflated, but what are you looking for? A particular sound, bounce, feeling?	1)more for the bouce/feeling. Just want to know there is pressure in them. Only OCD people check every tire for pressure on a daily basis and I have never seen anyone do it frankly other then in their drives(2 front tires).
What kind of fuel mileage do you get?	2) Depends on the weight. At 45k(about the maximum you can haul) it's about 4 mpg. A very light weight(10k or less) is about 6-8mpg. It also depends on the truck. The older model you get the less it is.
Do you have to pay for your own fuel and wait to be reimbursed?	3) Only Owner Operators do that. That is a small percentage(guessing 10% tops of trucks on the road. a huge tops) of truck drivers on the road. I'm sure if you researched it you could get a better number. Company drivers usually have a company card that truck stops accept or in my instance i have a company credit card with my name and the companies name on it. So no most do not pay for their fuel.
Do you eat out for most meals? In the truck?	4)It's give and take. Most truck drivers have a fridge. As you can imagine it's not a big fridge. Let alone there is only so many deli sandwiches you can eat during a week(=P). Also I have a APU unit. This gives me actual regular plugs to for instance plug in a microwave. Or a toaster. Most of the trucks do not have this tho in the last 3-5 years if has rapidly been going because instead of idling the truck you can save tons by running a APU which gives you poweac/heat with much less fuel per hour. To idle the truck is a gallon a hour. I'm not sure exactly what it is to run the APU but it is SIGNIFICANTLY less. So to get back to you question, Mostly deli meat, canned food, fast food, fruit, restaurants, and anything you can microwave. (still unhealthy) I posted this on a different link. If your a healthy person and pay attention to what you eat and exercise you'll be okay. If your a person who likes to eat and drink beer and not exersice you'll gain alot of weight.(this is me LOL)
Are you responding while driving?	5)Depends. No i do not text while i'm driving. And frankly never use my phone except when i do not see another car on the road for a mile in either direction. If it's 3 am and there is no one around sometimes i hope onto a phone game like dark summoners and spend my ep.=P.
I've spent a lot of my life in Amarillo, a city you've passed through a time or two no doubt. What do you think? And have you tried that Indian restaurant / truck-stop? It's legit!	Used to go through there all the time at my first company but only once in the last 4 years. Sadly i have not stopped there tho. I tend to try to stop at truck stops out of town because it's much easier to park.

I only take 5 of them so far because i at least want them to start school and learn how to act a little better because it's not like i can really take care of them while i'm driving. They need to be able to handle themselves during that time. I'm home every week from 1-4 days so frequantly but still not enough. But it pays the bills and i wil lnot be over the road much long. year or so more.

i want to say thanks for being a part of the backbone of this country. Second i have a deep respect for truck drivers, the job is not easy at all. I want to know what economic policies would help you and your colleagues? The price of gas is obviously outrageous, and something needs to be done about it. What other things could be achieved to make living easier for truck drivers?	I really wish they would put more rules and regulation into the training of drivers instead of having bad drivers ruin it for us later making them put more regulation on us much more exp drivers.
	Would also like to see more truck stops and parking mostly in the north east. It's very hard to get around up there and if you dont find a spot by 7pm your screwed.
How many drivers would you say are regularly abusing amphetamines in order to do their job?	Not quick sure. If i were to just guess i would say not many. Not only can your company test you but DoT can also so it's a double whammy. I would say the ones that do are probably owner operators.
I read somewhere that a lot of truckers make over $100,000 p/a. How realistic is this ?	Owner.Operators do if they run there business right. I make about 50-60k a year depending on loads i get that year.

Do truck drivers really talk to each other about the traffic? My brother said all the trucks would get off the freeway and then he'd eventually run into an accident. Was that just a coincidence?	Oh definitely yes they do. CB's can range from afew miles to 10's of miles. Trust me when you in a traffic jam Most truckers and yapping on the CB.

Lot lizards. What's the deal?	I've only seen 2 in 5 years. They are nasty and rude. both times they pounded on my door at about 3am while i was sleeping. Needless to say i was not very happy about it.
Do you ever piss in jugs and throw them out the window to avoid having to stop?	I have pissed in jugs and no i never throw them i have brought them home and dumped them in the toilet. Doesnt happen often but sometimes when you wake up in the morning and have to pee like a racehorse and the bathroom is 1/4 mile away across a parking lot you take the quicker option.
Whats the worst and best thing a dispatcher has ever done for you?	Best thing is when my last child was born last year and tho i was 1200 or so miles away waiting for a back haul to come home she basically told me screw it and get your butt home. (pretty expensive for the company to have you drive 1200 miles without a load). I'm not sure there has been a worst. I guess my first company Werner tried to get me to drive over hours a couple times.
I've thought about being a trucker, at least for a year or two, would you recommend it?	Definitely depends. Do you have a gf/wife? With kids? Can you support them already with the income you make? If the answer to my first question is yes then maybe...if the answer to the second question is yes maybe but much harder. If your answer to the third question is yes then definitely do not do it.
Whats the longest you stay on the road and what's your schedule normally like, ie when do you start/stop driving? My dad owns a trucking company but in a less developed country so this is interesting to me.	My first year driving i was on the road 4-8 weeks at a time...sucked balls. Now i'm home every week for 1-4 days depending. I like to start very early. About 2-3 am to beat some rush hour and have no traffic. Also by doing so i'm done driving about 2-3 pm and easy to find a parking spot at a truck stop.
I'm currently single, sort of in school, but struggling to pay for school and help out my mom at the same time, I don't really have a lot to keep me where I am at the moment, Thanks for getting back to me!	If your single and love to drive it is a very well paying career. With almost no schooling. 2-6 weeks depending. Your first year is like 30k with a recruit company. Your second year to go to a little better company is like 40k+. Without a family this is a great career. Good money. That a regional job so your home every week to hang with friends and have the money to do so. Do your best to have no tickets or accidents so in 3-5 years so you can go local and make the same amount of money yet home everyday. Being that you live with mom is a bonus. You can easily help her pay some bills yet also not be there to bother her. Lastly, You have to love to drive. Be able to deal with assholes on the road. And kinda be a loner a bit. If you live online and your real friends are kick ass and you can hang every weekend and also skype on the weekdays. This is golden for you. It's when you have a family where it causes drama.
My question is: whats your favourite radio show? If if were a truck driver, i think it would be coast to coast am. I can imagine myself driving some random night in the 90s listening to art bell and getting shivers.	In the morning it's "The Bob and Tom show" in the north or "Lex and Terry" in the south. Which state has the worst roads?	Thats hard to answer. The last 3 years i basically only go from MI to FL. Indiana and kentucky have some nasty spots. Michigan side roads BLOW.
Thanks. I am from Michigan and everyone always says how we have the worst but I figured they said that everywhere.	I'm from Muskegon so i know the stories well. We dont have the worst interstates but maybe the worst side roads.
Is there any reason for a truck to be driving through a metropolitan area during rush hour? can't you guys schedule your routes and breaks around that time window? i imagine it wastes gas and is frustrating for the driver, not to mention to the negative affect on traffic.	Most do not have a choice. They are dispatched there with appointment times and can't really tell there boss no. I try to time my drives when i'm just driving thru a city to not do it thru rush hour. I dont want to be in a traffic jam just as bad as you dont.=)
Yeah exactly, while i am bitching about it as a car driver, i don't imagine it's very pleasant for a truck driver. i would think bosses would try to avoid those areas at all costs too to save idling time and increasing potential for accidents.	Its hard for them to considering alit of places are only open during the day. The business scheduals the appt. Not the trucking company. Freight has to role whether rush hour or not.

My women treats me well when i am home so none of that for me. And we have Skype which helps tease during the week. Have never arm wrestled while i have been a truck driver sorry.

I could imagine that. I've always thought of that as the advantage of renting a house (not having to deal with shit), I could imagine it's the same with a truck.	It's a exceptional extra amount of paperwork then also dealing with buying yoru own fuel and doing your own repairs or paying for them yourself. then there is doing your taxes...

This is something I was told once: if in an accident (and you are not at fault) you can still loose your truck license?	That is true. Obviously if it's minor and you've only had one or 2 then no but it is our job to drive defensive and pay attention to make sure a accident doesnt happen. Of course that doesnt mean everyone will get fired in they are in a bad accident but if you have a history even if they are not your fault you can get fired.
As a woman, I somehow feel unsafe near truckers. Perhaps it's unfair, but my gut always tells me to stay away from men in trucks. Is my gut overreacting?	Just started the official AMA a min ago. feel free to post this there.
	Seems that did not fly so I'm coming back to answer your question. I think it's unfair to label all truck drivers as bad. Use you gut instinct like you do being around any guy. being a truck driver doesnt make you bad. Being a dirty asshole does. ;)
