SportsBetting is a one-stop-shop for nearly every popular type of gambling – legal sports betting, casino gaming, horse racing betting, and poker. Headquartered in Panama, the site initially launched in 1999 but was acquired by BetOnline in 2012. Since the acquisition, SportsBetting has become one of the top legal betting sites for players from the United States. It is one of the few legal betting sites that remained in the US market after Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act (UIGEA) of 2006. The federal law has no impact on the legality of online sports betting, but is essentially a banking restriction on unregulated payment processors. SportsBetting is well aware of this law and they have created ways to make sure that bettors can still safely and efficiently receive their winnings. SportsBetting has remained committed to U.S. players and is today one of the best betting sites that accept residents of all 50 states.
SportsBetting offers the complete package for every type of player in the US, and you will find that the site truly outshines the competition in certain areas. Huge bonuses and promotions, the latest betting odds, quick registration, and reliable banking are just some of the strong points of this particular betting site. The overall variety, whether it be the selection of sports or the catalog of casino games, is quite impressive at the online gambling site. In our legal SportsBetting review for US players, we will go into detail on these topics and more.

Welcome back to the forty-eighth edition of /neoliberal elects the American presidents!
This will be a fairly consistent weekly thing - every week, a new election, until we run out.
I highly encourage you - at least in terms of the vote you cast - to try to think from the perspective of the year the election was held, without knowing the future or how the next administration would go. I'm not going to be trying to enforce that, but feel free to remind fellow commenters of this distinction.
If you're really feeling hardcore, feel free to even speak in the present tense as if the election is truly upcoming!
Whether third and fourth candidates are considered "major" enough to include in the strawpoll will be largely at my discretion and depend on things like whether they were actually intending to run for President, and whether they wound up actually pulling in a meaningful amount of the popular vote and even electoral votes. I may also invoke special rules in how the results will be interpreted in certain elections to better approximate historical reality.
While I will always give some brief background info to spur the discussion, please don't hesitate to bring your own research and knowledge into the mix! There's no way I'll cover everything!
Ronald Reagan v Walter Mondale, 1984
Profiles
  • Ronald Reagan is the 73-year-old Republican candidate and the current President. His running mate is current Vice President George Bush.
  • Walter Mondale is the 56-year-old Democratic candidate and the previous Vice President. His running mate is US Representative from New York Geraldine Ferraro.
Issues and Background
  • Within a year of taking office, President Reagan signed comprehensive tax reform legislation that exemplified his economic philosophy. The top marginal income rate was cut from 70% to 50%, and the rate on the lowest taxable bracket was reduced from 14% to 11%. The capital gains tax was reduced from 28% of 20%. Legislation in 1982, prompted by increases in the deficit, prevented the full tax cut aspirations of the 1981 legislation from going into effect. Reagan and his supporters credit his economic policies with the strong economic recovery since the beginning of 1983.
  • The last couple years have seen very large federal budget deficits, with the 1983 peak at a level unseen since immediately following World War II, even relative to GDP. Mondale has chosen to make this arguably his biggest domestic campaign issue. Mondale has argued that the "question of the deficit and getting interest rates down is the most important domestic problem of our time - nothing else compares with it." He has spoken in stark terms about the alleged stakes, saying:
The President's point that growth will cure the deficit is obviously not the case. The deficit will get worse even with growth. Thus it is a very severe problem that threatens our future, saddles our kids with a with a trillion dollars worth of debt, is making us into a debtor nation, is destroying our position in international commerce, driving up interest rates, and is making the budget increasingly unmanageable.
Further, Mondale has gone further in his gambit on making the deficit an election issue by pledging to raise taxes. In his nomination acceptance speech, Mondale said:
Whoever is inaugurated in January, the American people will have to pay Mr. Reagan's bills. The budget will be squeezed. Taxes will go up. And anyone who says they won't is not telling the truth to the American people.
I mean business. By the end of my first term, I will reduce the Reagan budget deficit by two-thirds.
Let's tell the truth. That must be done - it must be done. Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won't tell you. I just did.
    • Specifically, the Mondale deficit reduction plan calls for $85 billion in new tax revenues and $105 billion in cuts in projected spending. The entirety of the new tax revenue is to be earmarked for a special fund to reduce the deficit. Any further new spending will be "pay as you go," requiring new revenue to cover the spending. The planned spending cuts are mostly decreases in the planned growth of spending, including for the military and Medicare, rather than outright cuts.
    • According to Mondale campaign advisers, a typical family of four with a gross annual income of $25,000 (OOC: ~$62,000 in 2020 dollars, same format for further parentheticals) will not see their taxes go up. However, by 1989, families making $25,000 to $35,000 (~$62,000 to $86,000) will see a tax increase of about $95 (~$200) families making up to $45,000 (~$111,000) will pay roughly $200 (~$500) more and families making $100,000 (~$250,000) will pay about $2,600 (~$6,400) more.
    • Republicans have of course criticized the Mondale plan sharply. Vice President Bush called it a "program for failure" that would stall the recovery. Reagan insists that deficit reduction must come through economic growth and reductions in wasteful government spending. Reagan describes a tax increase as a "last resort."
  • Religion and issues of morality have come up several times during this campaign. President Reagan favors a Constitutional amendment that would permit organized prayers in public schools that students can opt-out of. Mondale opposes the amendment. President Reagan also supports a Constitutional amendment banning abortions except when the life of the mother is at risk. Mondale is personally opposed to abortion but believes it should be a woman's individual choice. Mondale's running mate Geraldine Ferraro has received pushback for her statement that, "the President goes around calling himself a good Christian; I don't for a minute believe it," criticizing Reagan's policies as "unfair" and "discriminatory."
  • In fall 1983, following an internal power struggle in the country and pleas from other Caribbean nations, the United States invaded Grenada alongside several Caribbean nations. The invasion was successful, resulting in the establishment of a new interim government. Elections are intended to take place in the coming months. The Reagan Administration justified the intervention on the basis of protecting US medical students on the island. The UN General Assembly voted 108 to 9 to call the intervention a "flagrant violation of international law." Mondale raised questions about the invasion early on, but in the past couple months has spoken favorably of it.
  • The United States along with three European nations introduced a peacekeeping force into Lebanon in 1982, in the broader context of the Lebanese Civil War. US diplomatic and military forces have been the victim of a number of suicide bombings, in particular the 1983 bombings of Beirut barracks, killing 241 US military personnel. Mondale has been sharply critical of Reagan with respect to these bombings, arguing that there was plenty of warning to prevent them. Mondale has further argued that overall US policy in Lebanon has been marked by "unbelievable disorganization." In January, Mondale called for the withdrawal of US marines from Lebanon. Reagan argues that the US presence in Lebanon helped facilitate the withdrawal of Palestinian guerrilla fighters.
  • At no point in his first term thus far has President Reagan met with his Soviet counterpart, Konstantin Chernenko. Mondale has frequently criticized Reagan for this, and has promised he would hold annual summit meetings with Soviet leaders. Reagan has said that he would like a summit, but needs to feel sure it will produce results before it happens. More broadly, Reagan has described the necessary policy towards the Soviet Union as one of "credible deterrence and peaceful competition," though he has also not held back in his criticism of the Soviet Union, calling it just last year an "evil empire."
  • In 1979, the Sandinista National Liberation Front in Nicaragua overthrew the Somoza dictatorship and established a new government. Since then, counterrevolutionary forces including former pro-Somoza forces as well as disillusioned former Sandinistas, have engaged in armed conflict against the Sandinista government. Reagan cancelled economic aid to Nicaragua upon taking office, but has since said that there have been attempts to get along with the new government. However, Reagan has been sharply critical of Nicaragua's accused military buildup and "meddling" in El Salvador.
    • Mondale has criticized Reagan's "failed policies" in Central America and has promised that if elected, he would end all US military exercises in Central America, withdraw combat forces from Honduras, and "end the covert activities directed toward Nicaragua."
    • A CIA booklet became public this October which has raised questions about the nature of US covert activities in Nicaragua. As reported by the New York Times:
A Central Intelligence Agency document that became public this week tells Nicaraguan rebels how to win popular support and gives advice on political assassination, blackmail and mob violence.
The 44-page booklet, titled ''Psychological Operations in Guerrilla Warfare,'' is a primer on insurgency. Most activity of this sort in Nicaragua has been paid for by the United States through the C.I.A.
The primer explains how to kidnap and kill officials, blow up public buildings and blackmail ordinary citizens.
  • Ferraro and her husband have come under intense media scrutiny over their financial history, with accusations ranging from tax avoidance to connections to organized crime, pornography, and gambling. In response, the couple has relented in releasing several years of tax returns, and Ferraro has allowed the media hours of her time to ask questions related to her and her husband's finances. Most accusations against them have proven to be exaggerated, though there are still lingering questions regarding certain accounting errors that were made. For more technical details, see coverage by the New York Times or Washington Post.
  • Particularly following what some considered to be a sub-par first debate performance, some Democrats are openly raising the question of whether Reagan, 73, is too old to continue serving as President. Asked at a White House event whether age should be considered a legitimate issue, Reagan said jokingly of Mondale, "I'll challenge him to an arm-wrestle any time." Reagan's more vigorous second debate performance has led to a diminishing of the age discussion.
  • In June 1981, the Associated Press and Los Angeles Times reported on a rare lung infection in 5 young previously healthy gay men in Los Angeles. Since then, over 6,000 cases of "acquired immune deficiency syndrome" (AIDS) have been reported to public health officials. In April of this year, the cause of the disease was discovered, a retrovirus known as HTLV-III. According to the CDC, "most cases have been reported among homosexual men with multiple sexual partners, abusers of intravenous drugs, and Haitians, especially those who have entered the country within the past few years." The case fatality rate is extremely high. Scientists say the virus is mainly spread through sexual contact. There were two major developments just recently in October. First, the New York Times reported that saliva may be a possible source of transmission, though it remains unlikely that it is a "key mode of spread." Second, under pressure from Mayor Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco public health officials ordered a number of bathhouses and sex clubs geared towards homosexual men closed. Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services argue that this disease has become a top research priority for them, and that they expect to spend many millions of dollars on research grants and other efforts. However, some groups like the National Gay Task Force have criticized the government sharply and say that not nearly enough is being done. Many criticisms of the government and other institutions and groups of people are covered in the essay from last year famous in the gay community, "1,112 and Counting" by Larry Kramer, published in the New York Native. Neither Reagan nor Mondale have spoken of this disease on the campaign trail.
OOC Note: There is no indication that AIDS was an issue in the presidential election. Even gay newspapers from this time did not relate the crisis much if at all to the presidential election. To the extent that government policy was discussed, it was often local policy. Why mention it then? Well, it's a similar situation to Japanese internment and the 1944 election. I know some of you will bring this up no matter what, understandably, and so I'd like to at the very least calibrate the discussion to the year of the election with proper context and background.
Platforms (Important note if this is influencing your vote: These are just excerpts, not everything is included and inclusion of a point in one set of excerpts does NOT mean the other party took the opposing stance or didn't mention it; also, especially in the modern era, a Presidential candidate may disagree with the party platform)
Read the full 1984 Republican platform here. 10 Excerpts:
  1. "We reaffirm our conviction that State and local governments closest to the people are the best and most efficient"
  2. "The Republican Party pledges to continue our efforts to lower tax rates, change and modernize the tax system, and eliminate the incentive-destroying effects of graduated tax rates ... We therefore support tax reform that will lead to a fair and simple tax system and believe a modified flat tax—with specific exemptions for such items as mortgage interest—is a most promising approach"
  3. "The President is denied proper control over the federal budget ... To remedy this, we support enhanced authority to prevent wasteful spending, including a line-item veto"
  4. "We need coordination between fiscal and monetary policy, timely information about Fed decisions, and an end to the uncertainties people face in obtaining money and credit ... The Gold Standard may be a useful mechanism for realizing the Federal Reserve's determination to adopt monetary policies needed to sustain price stability"
  5. "The greatest danger today to our international trade is a growing protectionist sentiment"
  6. "The Republican Party has deep concern about gratuitous sex and violence in the entertainment media, both of which contribute to the problem of crime against children and women"
  7. "We Republicans emphasize that there is a profound moral difference between the actions and ideals of Marxist-Leninist regimes and those of democratic governments, and we reject the notions of guilt and apology which animate so much of the foreign policy of the Democratic Party"
  8. "Stable and peaceful relations with the Soviet Union are possible and desirable, but they depend upon the credibility of American strength and determination"
  9. "We ... reaffirm our support for a human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children"
  10. "We affirm our country's absolute fight to control its borders ... Those desiring to enter must comply with our immigration laws ... Failure to do so not only is an offense to the American people but is fundamentally unjust to those in foreign lands patiently waiting for legal entry ... We will preserve the principle of family reunification"
Read the full 1984 Democratic platform here. 10 Excerpts:
  1. "Instead of runaway deficits, a Democratic Administration will pursue overall economic policies that sharply reduce deficits, down interest rates, free savings for private investment, prevent another explosion of inflation and put the dollar on a competitive footing"
  2. "We will pursue international negotiations to open markets and eliminate trade restrictions, recognizing that the growth and stability of the Third World depends on its ability to sell its products in international markets"
  3. "The Environmental Protection Agency should receive a budget that exceeds in real dollars the agency's purchasing power when President Reagan took office, since the agency's workload has almost doubled in recent years"
  4. "After four years in which the roll of dishonor in the Administration has grown weekly and monthly—from Richard Allen to Rita Lavelle, from Thomas Reed to James Watt—it is time for an end to the embarrassment of Republican cronyism and malfeasance"
  5. "Violent acts of bigotry, hatred and extremism aimed at women, racial, ethnic and religious minorities, and gay men and lesbians have become an alarmingly common phenomenon ... A Democratic Administration will work vigorously to address, document, and end all such violence"
  6. "In the year made famous by George Orwell, we can see the realization of many of his grimmest prophecies in the totalitarian Soviet state, which has amassed an arsenal of weapons far beyond its defensive needs"
  7. "Sadly, Mr. Reagan has opted for the all too frequent American response to the unrest that has characterized Central America-military assistance ... Over the past 100 years, Panama. Nicaragua, and Honduras have all been occupied by U.S. forces in an effort to suppress indigenous revolutionary movements"
  8. "A Democratic President will pursue a foreign policy that advances basic civil and political rights—freedom of speech, association, thought and religion, the right to leave, freedom of the integrity of the person, and the prohibition of torture, arbitrary detention and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment—and that seeks as well to attain basic, economic, social, and cultural rights"
  9. "We support tough restraints on the manufacture, transportation, and sale of snub-nosed handguns, which have no legitimate sporting use and are used in a high proportion of violent crimes"
  10. "...the Reagan Administration has acted as if deficits do not count ... The deficits are huge and are expected to get larger—and they are a major negative factor in everything from high interest rates to the third world debt crisis"

Hard truths: Knight of Malta Frank Fahrenkopf and Roman Catholic priest John L. Jenkins control the Presidential Debates - American ideology is a failure and is literally Jesuitism

The Knights of Malta/Sovereign Military Order of Malta is a crusading Order dating back to the year 1099. They are considered a sovereign entity under international law and hold observer status at the United Nations. There is no other organization on earth which is considered sovereign while lacking actual territory and nationhood. The SMOM is an extremely powerful Vatican knighthood working to enforce the temporal/political power of the Holy See, now controlled by the Jesuit Order (also a military Order) since 1814.
The Jesuits have used their university system in America to train the Catholic laity who enter into government and politics. The foremost of these universities is Georgetown University near Washington D.C. There, the Jesuits have created entire programs dedicated to pushing the democratic form of government modeled on America. This is because around the 1950s, the American democracy was determined to be the best vehicle by which the Jesuits can take and maintain control of nations. The most prominent Jesuit who was responsible for the adoption of this course of action was John Courtney Murray who worked with the CIA (also Catholic controlled) to spread Americanism.
The technical details are as follows: Jesuit Robert Bellermine's indirect theory of papal power was revived under Pius XI in the 1930s for the purpose of infiltrating states using the Catholic Action movement comprised of the laity, especially in the intellectual sphere. The Catholic Action model of gaining political hegemony was promoted by powerful American Jesuit (CIA) John Courtney Murray who revised Bellermine's theory of indirect power; Bellermine having pushed the doctrines of equality taken up specifically by Thomas Jefferson. Murray was a leading advisor at the Vatican II conference which produced the document "Lumen gentium" calling on world action from the laity reflecting the earlier Catholic Action model. American democracy is the easiest politcal system for the church to control through this model, hence Murray's assistance to the CIA in spreading it. One may wish to view my recent video Commission on Presidential Debates: Catholic-Imposed Limitations in American Political Discourse which delves into this subject.
Now, The Commission on Presidential debates, founded and chaired by Jesuit Georgetown professor and Knight of Malta Frank Fahrenkopf is strictly governed so as to bar candidates outside of the two major politcal parties which uphold the standard American ideology the Jesuits seek to maintain and enforce throughout the world. Given the previous background on the Jesuits and American democracy, it is no surprise that Fahrenkopf was also a founder of the National Endowment for Democracy which has the goal of promoting democracy abroad.
The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) is a nonprofit corporation established in 1987 under the joint sponsorship of the Democratic and Republican political parties in the United States.[1][3] The CPD sponsors and produces debates for U.S. presidential and vice-presidential candidates and undertakes research and educational activities relating to the debates. It has run all of the presidential debates held since 1988. The commission's debates are sponsored by private contributions from foundations and corporations[4] as well as fees from hosting institutions.[5]
The commission's exclusion of third-party candidates from the debates has been the subject of controversy and legal challenges.

A Timeline of a Different Cold War - The Heir Apparent: The Legacy of Henry Wallace

A Timeline of a Different Cold War - The Heir Apparent: The Legacy of Henry Wallace
(This is work in progress) Hope you enjoy inventive timelines ;)
The Heir Apparent: The Legacy of Henry Wallace

US and Soviet Leaders
Cold War Circa 2016
Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, 1st Man on the Moon
July 19-21, 1944: Under pressure from FDR, and the re-energized Left in the party, the DNC relents and Henry Wallace is renominated as Roosevelt’s VP for 1944 General Election.

July 21, 1944 - The United States military begins to retake the island of Guam after Japanese troops had occupied the island during World War II. The battle would end on August 10.

November 6, 1944 - The last campaign speech of Franklin D. Roosevelt, seeking his fourth term in office, is broadcast from his Hyde Park, New York home. One day later, Roosevelt would gain that fourth term by a significant, but smaller margin than any of his previous elections, especially in the popular vote where Thomas Dewey lost by only three and one half million votes. The Electoral College margin, however, at 399 to 132, ensured Roosevelt good footing in the final prosecution of World War II.

December 18, 1944 - The United States Supreme Court rules in the case of Korematsu vs. the United States, the wartime internment of Japanese Americans on the West Coast was valid during a time of war.

1945
February 4-11, 1945 - President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, and Premier Josef Stalin hold the Yalta Conference in the Soviet Union to discuss post-war Europe. Stalin meets with VP Henry Wallace many times during the conference, with FDR's health clearly failing, Stalin comes to believe that Wallace is someone that will be just as accomodating as FDR, if not more. FDR & Wallace want to prioritize the Pacific Theater and agree with Stalin to halt at the Wessen River in exchange for full Soviet commitment to routing the Japanese from the Asian mainland. This works out greatly to the benefit of the Soviet post-war position.

February 19, 1945 - Thirty thousand United States Marines land on Iwo Jima.

March 1, 1945 - American troops cross the Rhine River at Remagen, Germany. Two weeks later, on March 18, twelve hundred and fifty U.S. bombers attack Berlin, causing Adolf Hitler to announce the destruction of his own industries and military installations one day later in preparation for invasion. US forces advance eastward until they halted at the Wesser River as agreed at Yalta.

April 1, 1945 - American troops invade Okinawa, beginning the Battle of Okinawa, which would continue until June 21.

April 12, 1945 - President Roosevelt dies suddenly; Vice President Henry Wallace assumes the presidency and role as commander in chief for the duration of World War II.

May 2, 1945 – The Red Army captures Berlin following the suicide of Hitler and other Nazi leaders in a secret bunker. The Werhmacht continues fighting the Red Army east of the Wesser River.

May 17, 1945 - Wehrmacht High Command surrenders after their lines collapse allowing the Soviets to advance to the River Wesser. Soviet and US allies meet at Wilhelm Kaisen bridge in Bremen and fraternize with each other in celebration.

May 21, 1945 - The unconditional surrender of Germany at Reims, France concludes the military engagements of World War II in Europe. It is accepted by General Dwight D. Eisenhower in his role as the commander of Allied troops in the European theater of the war.

July 5, 1945 - In a surpise landslide, Labor wins the UK election. Despite the popularity of Churchill as a leader, the electorate did not want the Tories in charge of the recovery as they were for the previous depression recovery. President Wallace reaffirms America's special relationship with the UK and welcomes the renewed shift to the left.

July 16, 1945 - The first atomic bomb, the Trinity Test, is exploded at Alamogordo, New Mexico, after its production at Los Alamos.

August 2, 1945 - The Potsdam Conference concludes with the UK rather sidelined and the US, represented by Wallace, largely indifferent to Soviet expansion. The biggest change from Yalta, was the the abandonment of seperate zones of control for Berlin and Vienna while retaining the zones for Germany as a whole. Wallace was mosty focused on ensuring full Soviet cooperation with other allies regarding empowering the Allied Control Commission to make systemic changes in Germany. Within 5 years Germany would become more agrarian and lose most heavy manfucaturing capacity in favor of light manufacturing. Most significantly Potsdam established Denazification and the War Crimes Tribunal at Nuremburg.

August 6, 1945 - After much debate with the top brass, President Henry Wallace refuses to give the go-ahead for the use of the atomic bomb, citing such devastation would only harden the Japanese will to resist. He is also keen to keep the Soviets from discovering America’s atomic weapons project for both diplomatic and national security reasons. Operation Downfall is initiated instead as the official war plan to force the Japanese surrender by invasion of their home islands.

October 4, 1945 - The Soviets begin a secret atomic weapons program of their own after discovering the success of the US atomic bomb project through the spy operation of Julius Rosenberg, Klaus Fuchs and David Greenglass. It would be decades before knowledge of the spy ring in the US would come to light.

October 30, 1945 - Soviets recruit Wernher von Braun and nearly a thousand other engineers and scientists into the Soviet rocket program greatly benefiting their long-sustained lead in the future Space Race.

November 14, 1945 – Operation Olympic begins with the invasion of Kyushu from the south coast by forces staged in Okinawa. July 4, 1946 - The island nation of the Philippines is given their independence by the United States. This ends four hundred and twenty-five years of dominance by the west.

1947
February 24, 1947 – Japan surrenders to the US by order of Emperor Hirohito, in return for protection, fearing Soviet control of a Post-War Japan. Days later US and Soviet forces meet at the 38th parallel and exchange diplomatic courtesies. Japan is divided by two occupation governments, Soviet-occupied "North Japan" (called the Democratic Republic of Japan) and US-Occupied "South" Japan.

March 1, 1947 - The Atomic Energy Commission is established.

March 12, 1947 - The Wallace Doctrine is announced to the U.S. Congress. When passed it would grant $700 million in humanitarian aid to liberal or socialist democracies. President Henry Wallace implements the act on May 22. During the bill signing ceremony, President Wallace argued for cooperation—not cold war—with the Soviet Union, setting the future course of US-Soviet diplomatic relations.

1948
January 1, 1948 - Five hundred thousand mine workers begin to strike, with other industries following their lead in solidarity, particularly the Railroad. This was a result of built up grievances that were suppressed by the wartime “No-Strike Pledge”. Wallace responds days later with an order to nationalize the nation’s iron and coal mines and then implement worker demands.

April 1, 1948 - US convinced UK to make assurances that the decision to replace the Reichsmark would be quashed after a diplomatic row erupted with the USSR that threatened the post-war cooperative order. The German debt crisis will remain acute for the next decade. Despite earlier threats by the Soviets the West-East German border remains open.

April 30, 1948 - The Organization of American States is founded by twenty-one nations to provide a mutual development pact after World War II. Founding nations were Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

November 2, 1948 - President Henry Wallace, and his VP Rexford Tugwell, rallies from behind, capturing his first president election from the presumptive winner Thomas E. Dewey, the governor of New York. Headlines in national newspapers had overtly announced a Dewey victory, only to be proven wrong. Wallace won the Electoral College vote with 283 to Dewey's 200, with Strom Thurmond, running as the States' Rights candidate, receiving 48 Electoral votes. Wallace won the election with 50.1% of the popular votes.

Wallace, in contrast to Dewey, saw unchecked private wealth as a threat to liberty. The “common man,” he argued, must “have the opportunity to form unions and bargain through them collectively.” Citing “Herr Thyssen, the wealthy German steel man” who “gave Hitler enough money to enable him to play on the minds of the German people,” Wallace warned of “wealthy men who sincerely believe that their wealth is likely to be safer if they can hire tyrants who lure the people back into slavery.”

Much throughout his campaign Wallace resisted Dewey's call for an American dominated post-war world order to counter the communist philosophy of the Soviet Union. Wallace's election was a rebuke to the concept of "American Exceptionalism". The implication was that global progress would flow from a partnership of nations, each of which boasted traditions of liberty, rather than domination by an America that would, as Wallace put it, “mold the world for such purposes as we see fit and by such means as we see fit.”

“Some have spoken of the ‘American century,’” he noted in his victory speech, but “I say that the century on which we are entering—the century which will come into being after this war—can be and must be the Century of the Common Man.”

December 15, 1948 - Alger Hiss, former State Department official, is indicted for perjury in connection to denials of passing state secrets to a communist spy ring. He would later be found not guilty in January 1950. It was perceived by the general public to be a partisan swipe at the Wallace administration.

January 8, 1949 - Council for Mutual Economic Assistance is founded by the Soviet Union to aid European nations still recovering from World War II to develop infrastructure, this is the Soviet response to the Marshall plan and generates much support among left-wing parties in Western Europe.

May 8, 1949 - A stalemate ends the Arab-Israeli War, despite an energenic Israeli counter-offensive that regained control over most of the Jewish Mandate borders and the Gaza Strip. [Battle] Venezuela vs Guyana: From Crisis to War

From Crisis to War

The First Blows
The tense quiet over the Venezuelan-Guyanese border, disturbed only by the symphonic sounds of the rainforest, broke to the screams of fighter jets and the shockwaves as they broke the sound barrier. The convoy of 12 F-16AM aircraft soared across the inky black-blue night’s sky briefly unopposed, as the Venezuelan soldiers close to the border watched the contrail plumes drift behind in awe. Before long, the attacking force reached Macagua Dam where the transformers and generating infrastructure temporarily lay undefended. All planes fired off their AGM-65 missiles, with all 3 sites taking significant damage. One was destroyed, and two were not far off, though could be repaired with time, money, and effort. Quickly after, the Guyanese F-16 force pivoted south and raced towards the Caruachi Dam. By now Venezuelan central command had figured out what was going on and immediately scrambled as big a response as they could, with a combined force of 30 F-16s and Sukhoi Su-30s rushing towards the threat. While the response force arrived too late for Macagua Dam, the two air forces met above Caruachi where several ATG missiles were fired off, but with less success than the Macagua bombing due to the enemy force present, and one of the biggest dogfights in Latin American history occurred, with Guyana losing 2 F-16s and 3 being damaged, and Venezuela losing 2 SU-MK2s and 1 F-16, with 2 of each being damaged. The damage to Caruachi did disrupt production, but not too severely and within the month operations would return to normal. Within 90 minutes the Venezuelans had gained air superiority in the confrontation and the Guyanese force scattered back across the border, with the Venezuelans not pursuing at risk of falling into a trap. A small second Guyanese incursion was attempted to reach their main priority, the Guri Dam, while a diversionary attack was made further south towards Caruachi again, and it succeeded in doing minor damage before being chased off with one Guyanese F-16 being incapacitated but managing to make a rocky land home.
Simultaneously to this, a Tuo Chiang-class Corvette rushed under cover towards Maracaibo and launched 8 supersonic Hsiung Feng III missiles towards targets there and in Punto Fijo where infrastructure was majorly damaged and many civilians murdered when one missile went wayward and plunged into the city centre of the latter. The already on-alert Venezuelan Navy quickly deployed to intercept it, but the ship had already fled and quickly hid in Panama’s waters, protected by the US, before it could receive any actual fire.
With this, the conflict had been escalated beyond return. The crisis had ended; the war had begun.
Beyond the Point of Return
As the great dawn sun rose over the deep, impenetrable Amazon Rainforest, the sound of Howler Monkeys echoed over the horizon alongside a myriad of birdsong and insect calls. For a few minutes there was a blissful silence as the Venezuelans rapidly moved their anti-air missile system (S-300s) closer to the border, began ordering troop manoeuvres on the ground, and established a quick plan for air supremacy. By the time the S-300s had been dragged to the border some hours later, escorted by the full weight of the Venezuelan air force, the extent of the damage done by Guyana was clear. Venezuelan energy production had been majorly dented, and regions closest to the dams worst hit experienced huge power outages, however much of the country remained only minorly impacted. Millions were without power and Caracas’ digital propaganda (TV, internet, etc) showing the Guyanese as the culprits could thus not reach them. As a countermeasure to this, leaflets illustrating the point were airdropped across areas affected and a mass campaign for the colectivos began to deliver food, portable generators, water, and such to impacted communities, with mixed success. For those who still had electricity the images of smoking transformers and desperate dogfighting created an even greater rally-to-the-flag effect, and anti-Guyanese hatred mutated into pro-government sentiment as ministers vowed revenge, with some party officials even vowing to invade and annex Guyana in response for this “imperialist war crime of the running dogs of the United States”. In the cities of Maracaibo and Punto Fijo there was large-scale destruction, though again colectivos rapidly mobilised to try and fill the gaps, albeit with only limited success as the bodies and rubble became difficult to manage.
With S-300s set up, the border became effectively secured as Guyanese military heads wisely brought all fighter jets out of range, and Venezuela gained air supremacy in its own country. It was time for the tide to turn.
While Venezuelan military officials desired an immediate push into the Guyanese national guard, they were stopped from doing so by new logistical constraints created by the power outages along the eastern side of the country, and so critical time was lost creating alternative ways to organise the frontlines, giving the Guyanese the chance to reinforce their numbers and bring up the Sky Bow III SAM system closer to the border.
By midday, the board had been set, and the real struggle would begin over the months to come.
Jungles Make Poor Battlefields
With air supremacy at home secured, Venezuela cautiously began attempting to bomb Guyanese infrastructure and were able to hit some minor targets close to the border before being quickly scared off by the introduction of Guyana’s Sky Bow III system to the battlefield. There is very little infrastructure close to the border and the bombing runs only minorly impacted Guyanese logistics which are largely based further back, as well as making the life of some poor villages a little bit more desolate. While both sides would continue to make daring air raids along the border, the air campaign would be effectively neutered from this point onwards as neither side dared to lose their air forces this early on in what could be a long conflict.
Guerrilla and reconnaissance units from Venezuela crossed covertly across into Guyana among the thick jungle in pouring rain (this is during the wet season). Recon units probed out well-entrenched Guyanese units holding close to the border using the Amazon as a defensive barrier alongside a basic trench system that had been constructed by those on the ground autonomously from central command. After exchanging fire from afar to test their response, it was clear there were no clear fault lines in the vanguard, though the National Guard was clearly worse in quality than the actual Venezuelan Army. Meanwhile, guerrilla units began setting up ambushes and raids from within the jungle against Guyanese forces before quickly melting back into the jungle. This further demoralised the already miserable defenders who were sitting among torrential rain, crashing lightning, and flooded trenches, with the brief gaps in the downpour not being much better as insects gorged upon soldiers on both sides. While in direct action the guerrillas were successful, when making contact with the local villages there was no amicable feelings towards the Venezuelans, with many close to the border being Ali’s most ardent supporters as they had suffered from the gold-mining gangs on the other side of the border the most, though still while they received no aid from the villagers, neither was pro-government sentiment strong enough for any more than a few snitches to reveal guerrilla movements. Paranoia increased among Guyana’s frontline and a deep sense of unease and desolation fell over most troops. Despite this, desertion was minimal, and the lines held firm. For now.
After the success of the guerrilla attacks, but not sensing any major weakness, the Venezuelan frontline made a cautious probing advance into Guyana, but made no progress against the dug-in defenders hidden among the trees and, after some brief skirmishing, it was clear that the line would hold and Guyana’s armour had learnt its lessons of the previous year.
As this was happening, the Venezuelan Navy began to attempt to assert naval supremacy and quickly came under attack by Yoon Youngha-class Patrol vessels alongside Super Tucano planes from above. After some weeks of on-and-off fighting in terrible weather, by the end of January things began to dry up and the Guyanese were forced back, giving Venezuela brief access to Guyana’s coastlines, but with the Americans quickly on the way, this would not last long…
From Local Conflict to International Proxy War
It did not take long for the American Navy to throw its vast, vast weight around in the region to defend its Guyanese allies. The USS Tripoli ERG, equipped with an impressive air force and a ship far more advanced than anything either side held, rolled into Georgetown, and firmly stopped any idea of air raids deeper into Guyanese territory. Upon request, the USS Tripoli deployed towards the frontline and engaged with the highly offensive Venezuelan naval advance. First engaging the Mariscal Sucre class frigate of Venezuela, F-35s leapt into action and rained down missiles onto the Mariscal Sucre which had no countermeasures, nor did the S-300 manage to target the jets, and before long the frigate burst aflame as a huge explosion burst out of the side. The ship sank after a futile, frantic attempt at reaching the coast, with sailors attempting to escape on lifeboats, many of which were quickly picked up and arrested by the Americans. As the Tripoli moved towards the Almirante Brion frigate and Constitución class gunboat closer to Venezuelan territory, a panicked withdrawal stopped the naval offensive and gave the US temporary control over the seas. The Constitución gunboat took significant damage during this retreat, though was not destroyed, and can be repaired in time.
Just after this, the Russian naval convoy finally arrived after several long weeks of travel across the Pacific. With the Americans publicly warning against such a move, the entry of the Russians to Venezuela was tense and the publics of both sides feared that a conflict might break out. These anxieties were eased when the Russian force was able to reach the country un-harassed, with the USS Tripoli shadowing it from a safe distance. 1,200 new troops were rushed in to protect strategic areas of the country, and most importantly 25 S-500 and S-400 battalions were set up to defend both the frontlines and Venezuelan military assets. This effectively put an end not only to Guyanese air-action in Venezuela, but also in even any jets going west of Georgetown due to the massive superiority of the S-500s over anything currently present on the ground. While the Americans continued to fly F-35 patrols off the coast as a show of force, neither the US nor Russia seriously considered challenging the other, and Moscow’s gamble had paid off. With this, Venezuela’s position was undeniably greatly improved.
Gaining confidence from the Russian presence, a second Venezuelan incursion into Guyanese territory was attempted, and this time they appeared to make some ground as Guyana’s frontline retreated further into the jungle, however, with Russian guidance great care was taken in not overstretching logistical lines or falling into a potential trap, and after taking over the border villages of Communal House San Martin de Turumbang (a tiny settlement of a few indigenous houses) and Baramita the invading force stopped to analyse Guyana’s reaction. When the predicted counterattack happened, a safe withdrawal followed, and it ended up not being very effective thanks to the careful foreplanning from Caracas. The frontlines remain along the de jure borders.

The Home Fronts

Venezuela
If Maduro’s position had been shored up by the previous Guyanese invasion, it was now at its most secure point ever thanks to the destruction wreaked by the clashes of late 2028 and early-to-mid 2029. Almost all of the population, even those critical of the Bolivarian government, realised the threat of Guyana required national unity. Mass demonstrations occurred in every major city in support of the government and in hatred of Guyana, and morale in the army was at its highest point in living memory.
Nonetheless, the infrastructure damage enacted by Guyana was major and could not be ignored. Huge swathes of the country were now without electricity or clean water, and the cities targeted by the naval attack now were strewn with rubble as multiple important locations were pancaked. Local colectivos urgently tried to fill in the gap by distributing clean food and water and contributing to reconstruction. This helped provide basic amenities but was unable to fully replace the infrastructure which was now destroyed. Technicians, aided by Surinamese experts, rapidly descended on the destroyed transformers to try and fix those that could be salvaged and replace those that couldn’t, but this would take time and money amid an economic downturn to Venezuela caused by the bombings and by the war in general meaning even more resources than before were redirected to the military. While the Venezuelan government is, for now, highly supported and its troops are invigorated, there will be a strong economic downturn due to the events that have unfolded, especially in areas that are more dependent on the damaged hydroelectric facilities, and poor results on the field (military and/or political/diplomatic) could lead to a change in tide.
Guyana
The domestic situation in Guyana, already dire, has not improved. The regular mass protests in almost every major population centre have now turned into regular riots as more and more manpower has been drawn to the frontline and more money invested into it. President Ali’s intransigence has led to widespread disapproval among the public and in some city centres the police have been forced to effectively withdraw, and at the very least, with the exception of Georgetown where a military presence bolstered by the Americans have frightened people into merely protesting vigorously, there have been large-scale clashes between law enforcement and protestors, with 7 protestors dying and 400 being injured in the first month and a half of 2019-in the same period 1 policeman was torn apart by an outraged mob the day after a protestor was shot dead as the policeman shot rubber bullets into the crowd, alongside 120 injured.
In the political sphere, outrage has continued to build, with most of Ali’s cabinet now urging him to stop the war, and the lower house of parliament passing a (non-binding and powerless) vote of no confidence against Ali, who promptly ignored it. Impeachment proceedings have been sped up and it is a genuine possibility that, should a few more major allies flip, he will be legally thrown out of office-for now, he is only protected by the massive amount of immunity and power held by a President in the Guyanese constitution. Despite constant ominous rumours of a military coup to depose Ali and stop the war, nothing of the sort has come to fruition-in part due to fear over American retaliation-and the military has remained loyal and is following orders.
Ali’s has gone beyond the edge of the cliff-now he is clinging on for dear life as his enemies stab at his fingers-it would take a miracle to save him now.

Conjecture; Trans-Gulf-Caribbean Alliance

Null Hypothesis: Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico (Spanish-language nations across north Caribbean) remain independent, no connections of ideology between them.
AltHyp: Suppose these Latin countries begin to collaborate with the aim to ultimately form a confederacy, building on certain strengths to create a bulwark of unity and Latin power across ~20°N latitude. Great for negotiations with USA, power generates respect. Why only these, not all the Latin countries? The larger the Union, the less chance for consensus. These countries are strategic to USA, thus the most attractive group (among Latins) for making deals thereby.

16:16 "foreign objectives, across the Caribbean; a firm understanding with Cuba"... (and continuing that thread eastward to the other Latin-based cultures, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.) "... greater soft-power to accomplish this, but make Mexico indispensable to USA." (A common language is important for friendships, race is too, so Haiti is an outlier to this idea.)
What strengths are featured across the Caribbean nations on our list?
Tourism, Tropical Agriculture, Recreational Intoxicants (aka illicit "drugs"), transcontinental shipping routes
Tourism
Prior to Castro's revolution, Cuba was a popular vacation spot during USA Prohibition era. Suppose it became a capitalist haven again, with Nevada-style regulated gambling, carefully monitored prostitution, etc. Combined with slick hotels, entertainment venues, and well-secured criminal-clean culture, a Latin holiday could be an economic game-changer again. In conflict with both Catholic and Communist morality, these "vices" would need to be segregated into 'red-light' districts, with the claim of providing alternatives for social deviance and poverty relief. If you admit the fact that vice will occur anyway, making it legal and cheap, but regulated, criminal activity will be reduced. If crime does not pay, it will be abandoned. (see discussion below)
Tropical Agriculture

Recreational Intoxicants
Latin countries are a major source of US illicit drug trade. Suppose this industry, now operated by criminal gangs, was co-opted by governments, then restricted to local, regulated enterprises. This trend is already happening in USA regards marijuana (cannabis sativa). Crucial to this plan is to keep it out of cross-border trade (which is a MAJOR irritation to USA). If the industry is strictly local, legal access could become a feature of the tourist industry. (See back pages, AgRev2-pt4.)

Contrary to the idiom "crime does not pay", which is a myth, benefits of criminal activity depend on who the criminals are. Here social class is important, because high-prestige persons are often secretly criminals. Their favored crimes are pedophilia, graft, illicit drug trafficking, and subversion (sedition).
